About
Barney
Barney Carleton serves as Senior Director, Broadcast Planning and Strategy for the NBA. In this role, Barney is responsible for working with teams, broadcast partners, vendors and venues to innovate the live game viewing experience across linear and digital platforms by implementing emerging broadcast technologies. Barney supports various key technology efforts, including the use of cloud production and leveraging innovative cameras and microphones to enhance game broadcasts.
Since he joined the NBA in 2015, Barney and his team have helped integrate wearable cameras on participants at NBA All Star 2023 in Indianapolis, oversaw the deployment of the Canon Free Viewpoint volumetric video system at Barclays Center and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in advance of the 2021-22 season, and created the Michelob Ultra Courtside virtual fan experience for the NBA Bubble in 2020. Barney continues to work on initiatives such as the Referee Communications, Local Media production planning and many other key initiatives for the NBA, WNBA, G League and other affiliated leagues
He’s also the adjunct professor for an ‘Introduction to Sports Broadcasting’ class at Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus.
Barney holds a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and MBA from St. John’s University.

Key Initiatives
Partnered with Microsoft. Leveraged MSFT Teams for teleconferencing utilizing “Together Mode”. Extracted NDI feed from each “meeting” in order to access high quality, low latency video/audio for inclusion in venue experience due to global pandemic
Continue to work on a multi-year project to introduce an intercom system to referees inclusive of an in-ear mold, lavalier style microphone and mutli-channel push-to-talk button
Have worked on introduction and approval of new cameras such as cable rails, robotics, drones, and microphones such as arrays, player mics, etc.
